To use the roof rails you have to be able to physically lift the bicycles UP to the roof and hold them study while you secure them.
Tricky to do alone.
Where as the access is much easier on a hitch.
(for both you as well as thieves - so you need to lock your bikes)
x2 via a hitch insert rack which will carry two bikes. Get a Class III hitch if you plan or may use it for other things and they can handle more bikes if the rack will accomodate them. You'll get less wind drag at the back and its much easier for you to remove then up top. Beside the Compass does not come with the Cross rails and another bike carrier is needed in addition which become as expensive as using a hitch method.
