My Compass is supposed to be arriving this week. Meanwhile I have not decided on the dealer's:

- Paint Protectant
- Rust Proof
- Undercoating
- or any of the extended warantees . . . .

Any opinions would be appreciated . . .
Thanks.

Against my better judgement i weant with the undercoating and extended warranty.. but not without talking the busines manager down a little bit first. There is a quite a bit of wiggleroom in the price of those warranty.

And it's always fun to negoiate with them, when they bring up the warranty it's fun to go into the "should i really need an extended warranty?? I mean your not selling me a lemon right??" I personally like to use the "jeez, an extended warranty?? Is'nt that really a just a bet against this fine auto you just sold??"

In the end you can easily knock $500 of a 4x80 bumper to bumper.. maybe even more. (i drive ALOT.. )

IMO the first 3 are worthless. You can buy Better Products for a Lot Less. The extended warranty Might be worth it depending on the coverage & cost.

Zorak, that is just too good. I didn't go with the extended warranty on mine, still debating that, but if I do go for it, I will have to keep those lines of yours in mind. Hopefully the dealer will get as much a kick out of it as I did!!!

As for extra paint protection, didn't go for that either. I plan on keeping it in shape. I don't live close enough to the ocean to warrant that, and it snows once in a blue moon around here (previous two times: 2004 and 1989), so didn't really worry much about that. Didn't it used to be, once upon a time, that undercoating and rust-proofing were part of the package, or am I just showing my age?

Thanks all . . . :D
Living in an area with way too much ice, snow, freezing rain, calcium and road salts on the roads for what seems like almost six months of the year makes rust proof a must. Most recent I have been treating my old car with annual oil spray. It is clear but for sure messy-dripping for a couple of weeks. It really prevents and retards rust perferation. The wax the dealer sounded smart, just a matter of trying to bargin a deal.

Through the dealer, these things are way overpriced. I'm going to do the undercoating aftermarket, and possibly rust proof. No need for paint sealer, and I didn't bother with extended warranties since my family are mechanics 8)

RUST PROOF FOLLOWUP

Well I bought the dealer’s hot wax rust proof treatment; supposedly they spray hot wax into the body cavities to coat the metal from the inside. They promise NO rust perforation for 5years. As the my dealer does not offer undercoating I felt less than totally protected and so went to the local rust-proofing franchise, they undercoat and treat the body cavities with a heated oil product, that although drips for a few days after, really does coat. I started using the treatment on my previous car, a BMW that had started rusting on the front fenders, the car was 10 winters old at the time and the rust really did not visibly increase over three more winters.

We have very hard winter conditions with lots of salt used from December through April and I intend on maintaining the car for a long time…so the dealer offers 5yrs. .the cars are really well enough built that they should last the 5years, the after market rust proofer gives a live time guarantee as long as you redo it each year, but remember it works.

While there the technician showed me that the dealer had not drilled holes in the pillars or doors, so how did they apply the hot wax? The wax product was clearly visible around the inner door edges as well as under the hood and cargo door, but was it only applied where it could be seen?? Duno!

I guess double protection is better than none, but for my money I think next time I would go with the aftermarket treatment.

Have a good winter.

What I found particularly interesting, was I received a mailer extending the lifetime powertrain limited warranty to me as a Compass owner, and I can purchase this for $700 USD as my extended warranty directly through Chrysler. I was almost (almost) tempted to trade mine in for an '08 just to get that warranty, but now, even after no one at the dealership knew anything about it (yet they sent the letter), that, to me, sounds like a pretty good deal. That offer expires at the end of this month, and I don't know if it applies in Canada, but worth a check into. Me, I am definitely going to opt for that one, as I get the most coverage for the life of the vehicle, non-transferrable of course, for the money.

No it doesn't apply in Canada because we don't even have the unlimited warranty on our 08's yet :( We're getting shafted.

I would definitely opt for it if given the chance because I plan on keeping my Compass long term!

I guess I would have to agree, on you guys up there getting shafted on that. I mean, I don't really understand all the differences between what you guys get offered and what we get, but that is crazy. Like you, I plan on keeping mine for a long time, too, and when it comes to expensive engine (I am waiting for a block for my Cherokee right now) and transmission repairs, those things are way too costly, especially when it comes to all of the technology involved in vehicles like the Compass. What type of extended warranty plans are available for you guys? Hopefully something that offers good coverage without the high price tag and/or deductible.
