Engine compartment loud moans and groans @-24C

I know there are many areas of Canada and USA who experience these very cold temps in the winter. Although there was very little I could do the Compass did start but I did not like to hear all that moaning and groaning of whatever was making that orchestra of noises under the hood. I let it warm up for 3 min before moving. I do have synthetic oil in this 5w20 as well for the winter. But surely these must be designed for even colder temperatures than this.

I am sure this has the cold weather package as there is a block heater in this North Edition. But leaving it on all night will cause other problems and or damage to the coolant getting too hot. I never seen one that was thermostatically controlled and I have seen some people who've burned their fluid due to extended plugin times of their block heater. I am not setup to plug in safely here with an extension cord out to the street area.

With this extreme cold there may be others experiencing this noise.

I have left my compass block heater+ Battery warmer plugged in for days on end when its' been very cold. I have a scanguage2 and the coolant temp reports being at around +10c when its -35c out.

I can't really see a problem with having the block heater plugged in for long periods of time when the temperature is below zero. I had the same setup on my previous Jeep Patriot and never had any issues.

The terrible sound you are hearing upon startup is most likely the power steering pump. With the fluid getting very thick from being so cold so power steering pump is the culprit. This may even be mentioned in the owners manual, despite it sounding bad it is perfectly normal. My previous jeep and this jeep have both run synthetic oil and have never had any long term issues. The old patriot made the exact same sound when starting from very cold temperatures.

They both will start when its below -30 and not even plugged in.

-30C you say, LOL I hope I don't experience that. That to cold even for me who likes the winter. No bugs and air conditioned all the time.

Thanks good to know about the PS pump then which would not benefit from a block heater. Maybe they're not as hot these heaters or controlled now. -24C or lower was the coldest I've started in and everything groaned.

I feel bad when I start it without being plugged in, my new Compass has the luxury of being plugged in when it needs to. My old 2008 Patriot sat for days on end in -30 weather while I was at work in a small town with no way to plug it in, it never left me stranded though.

Obviously a good battery makes all the difference in the world too.

Carry a booster pack just in case. The add juice can save you when you need it most. We have a few in the family here. But I had a Stanley model from Canadian Tire which also has a compressor, 12V socket & USB port. Soft tires can be corrected when needed as well. About $70 when on sale for that one. I use the compressor a lot and it charges direct via a power cord extension since the power supply is built in. No adapter etc which makes it easy to manage. Cranking is about 500amps or so they claim.
