I was curious if anyone knows and would care to share on how to properly use the AutoStick. I know it's fairly simple to use and the car won't really allow you to do too much damage, but I was wondering if anyone could explain on how to effectively and efficiently use the feature; (ie) when to shift, etc. I've never driven stick before but I also know that AutoStick is slightly different. I think it would give me something extra to do the days I get bored of the same commute.

From my observation, the autostick (with the 2.4L) seems to work best in situations where you want to accelerate faster than normal from a stopped situation.

When you try to accelerate fast using the normal 'D' mode of the CVT, that's when you get the various moaning sounds, and it doesn't seem like you're accelerating very fast. It's a bit deceptive, because you do get up to speed decently. It just doesn't seem like you are.

However, when you use the autostick startking in '1' and press the accelerator hard, the RPM's zoom right up to the 4-5k range, and stay there as you tap the shifter to the right to move up through the "gear range" that Chrysler has programmed into the CVT. This (in my opinion) translates into getting up to a certain speed considerably faster. Be ready to shift quickly though.... the gear range for each click is fairly short. Be sure to not over-rev your engine.

The tachometer never seems to rev as high in normal 'D' mode when accelerating hard. The autostick method guarantees that the engine stays up in the high rpm / torque range.

Just remember to shift it all the way into the 'D' mode after getting up to your cruising speed, so the automatic gearing feature can take back over again.

I think I read that the lower gears in autostick mode can also help when road conditions are bad, etc. But so far the above scenario is how I've been using my autostick feature. The engine definitely makes better sounds using the autostick approach when accelerating briskly, vs. the automatic 'D' mode. :D

So it's best to shift up between 4-5K?

What about down shifting? I heard it make help reduce wear on your breaks. Any thoughts?

It does help save your breaks when you "engine break". But, think of it this way. Would you rather put the stress on the brakes, or the transmission? Which costs less to repair?

I used to down shift all the time with my old car, which was a 5-speed. I stopped that habit in a big hurry when someone pointed that out to me.

That all being said, down shifting when approaching a stop during slippery conditions (snow, ice) helps reduce speed quickly, while maintaining control.

Great point. lol

So I guess overall the AutoStick feature is only useful in rare occasions. When you need to accelerate rather quickly, towing, and weather.

I know that you have the ability to 'down-shift' with the CVT, but I wouldn't recommend it. I've had friends with automatic transmissions that downshifted a couple times and dropped their tranny on the street because the system couldn't handle it. A manual transmission is made for this type of use and downshifting is recommended.
