was wondering if this has happened to anyone before.....

my stock head unit began making a strange sizzling sound and then shut off. sometimes, it comes back on, but then shuts off again, and again, and again....and now...well i really havent had any music for a week.

anyone else experience this? and i gather the unit is shot.

yikes that cant be good. Is the car still under warranty? If it is, you should be able to get a free replacement. If not, want to buy mine ... lol. :D

If you look behind the wire harness for your stereo you may find an inline fuse, depending on what type of wire it's on - and if it's blown - you may be sending too much current to the unit. If so, most new head units have a built in mech. that cuts power to the head unit and shuts it off compl. That may be why you experience the "sizzle+shutdown"

does it give you a 'noFuse' light on the instrument panel?
There's gotta be some type of short in your system somewhere (for you and our Bulgarian Jeep). That's the only thing that I can think of that will be shorting out either speakers and/or your stereo.

As for our "Bulgarian" friend, your speakers may not be "blown" due to music - if there is a short and it's bad enough, it can blow your speakers - same for your stereo.

Hope both of you get it figured out soon and fixed.

thanks for the words of encouragement.... i'm wondering if my warranty still holds, as i bought it in the u.s., and i seem to recall some legalese about transferring a car overseas and nulling the warranty, but i could be wrong.

i'm not looking forward to arguing my case in bulgarian.. :)

Well, I'm over in Germany and my warranty still stands. I'd call either Jeep or the dealership (if they still exist) and ask them. If you're in the Military it should still stand as long as you're within the parameters of the warranty (miles/year).

I would think that they would honor the warranty anywhere in the world they sell Jeeps! I mean damn, they're always telling me I can go to any dealership I wish, so what if the one I want to go to is in another country? lol
