This was a high failure part on early Compasses and mine finally also has gone. Electrically it was fine but the ADP (pulley) cased damage to the casing and more so that a new pulley change was not possible. Hence more expensive repair. I had a new alternator installed (not used, these can't be rebuilt)

I probably got away with using it longer than most but I gather it also depends on driving habits forcing the clutch to activate may hurry its failure. This is definitely a key failure item in the 1st generation Compass sad:series.

Although the sound was not particularily disturbing and my wife who drives this did not detect it. The ADP bearing had already cause significant damage to the alternator case and affected the windings.
I have a new assembly in now. this should last longer, I hope.
