I leased my new jeep compass 2018 on April 9. It has been around 3 weeks, I commute every day to work around 30mins, with heavy traffic. This is my main issue with the car right now, and I don't know if its me that I have a dud, or just all compasses. Ive filled my tank already 5 times. I got the car with 48miles. I have around 850 miles. So about 800 miles.


Ive never had a car that gives so bad MPGs. So can someone help me figure this out?

So ive driven around 800miles on it. Ive had 6 full tanks, one when I got the car from the dealer, and 5 times on gas stations around 12 gallons it fills up. Im constantly trying to get really good MPGs on the car, never revving really hard, going through nice roads, no hills or ect. I do travel on heavy traffic, on I66 in Northern Virginia. I leave my dash on the MPGs part. Average says 17. Even when im in the HOV lane, with someone, doing 55mphs for at least 15miles. Its still giving me around 20mpgs.

Is there something wrong with this car? I thought this car would give highway 30 and 22 city. Im not even getting none of those. Theres also nothing on the trunk, im not towing anything. Its just me and my wife sometimes in the car. I weigh around 240lbs. Im honestly perplexed. I always fill gas with either BP gas or Sunoco. I don't do off brands gas stations. Can someone help me? or is anyone else having trouble like this? Is it because of the trailhawk model. and the tires? is the 30highway that they claim on the sport model only?

If you have a look here, it seems that on average people are getting around 24mpg combined. Sitting in stop and go traffic is definitely going to bring down your efficiency however. The fuel economy of the trailhawk model seems to be fairly similar to what's found in the other trims, so I'm not sure why you're getting 17.

Hi Carlos,

I have 300 miles on mine. My average is 24.5. Much of that is highway driving. When im in town, 17mpg is the norm. So...

Our Trailhawk seems to be doing pretty good on MPG. My wife's work commute is real bad for getting decent MPG. Most of her drive is 35 MPH and she has to go up and over a steep hill both to and from work. She only drives around 10 min each way. So by the time everything is heated up well she is turning it off. Our worse for her driving a week in and out combined with some in town has been like 21mpg. Now that the outside temps are warming up it is showing 23.6.

If your not racing and reving it hard and not stuck idling a lot in traffic or live in steep mountains then you should be somewhere between 25-30 MPG doing around 55 MPH. At 17 MPG I would run it to the dealership and ask them to check everything out. Someone had a bad throttle body I think and their MPG suffered till it was found and replaced.

Something you can do is reset the MPG gauge during different parts of your commute this might show where your losing MPG then maybe tune your driving habit to counter. Our last trip I was trying to push 80 MPH in a bad headwind for around 20-25 miles let me tell you that sucks gass! The wind was so bad I pulled into a rest area soon after getting onto the interstate just to make sure the hood was closed right because it was dancing around. LOL I ended up slowing to 65 MPH to get the MPG back up. Had I not reset the MPG gauge when the speed limit on the interstate changed I would not have noticed the drop as quickly and whole trip MPG would have suffered more. That was our worse all interstate trip MPG wise I think it was like 22-23 MPG over 224 miles. Usually same trip at 70-75 MPH and no bad wind we get around 27 MPG.

Anyhow as it stands now we are happy with the MPG on our Trailhawk. Hope you get yours sorted out because they can get better MPG than 17.

I'm also unhappy on the mpg. I drive all highway to work, which is the only time I drive it. I live a mile from the interstate and my work is about a mile off of the interstate. I have never had over 22mpg with the cruise control set at 70. My commute is 2 miles of town driving, 15 miles on the highway.

Had my Trailhawk since Sept. 4300 miles so far. With mixed driving I'm at 16.7 mpg on my untouched trip b calculator. I'm not an aggressive driver at all and it is flat where I live. 16.7 is far less than the advertised mpg on even the Trailhawk stickers. My wife's Grand Cherokee gets much better mpg for a larger more powerful vehicle. I get around 12-14 around town and 20-24 highway mpg. I've seen numerous other complaints about poor mpg in older threads about other issues. I've been having electrical issues with mine and wonder if the poor mpg is just another symptom of that. Seems that those of us who are having electrical issues also experience poor mpg.

The Compass is optimized to run at 60 mph. If you look at your dash gauge when running 65 + or higher, the mpgs drop considerably.

16.7 is way too low for normal Compass. The Cherokee seems to get 20 mpg during mixed driving at best: MPG for 3.2 - 2014+ Jeep Cherokee Forums.

Mixed driving:
Compass: 24.5 mpg
Cherokee: 19.5 mpg

And my engine is not broke in yet.. only at 400 miles. I expect MPGs to improve even more for my Compass.

If going on a “cruse” (50-65 mph) my “trip” mpg shows upward of 31-33mph...yet on the “fuel economy “ screen the avg mpg is very, very slow to update.
Besides poor mpg on accell...seems 4-6gears are slow to down shift almost burdening enough to tank the mpg....wish they had a sport mode like the wife’s Grand Cherokke....
Although...as i reported on another [email protected],300 mi i did a full acceleration & since it feels like a sport mode...something changed, calibrated...seated? (But the mpg is about the same....22mpg (auto stop off) around rural town(few lights, traffic) 30+mpg on a cruse!

The Trailhawk is not good on gas and I think based on the fact that it is heavier than the other Compass's it shouldn't have been projected at the same MPG as the general Compass...I have been averaging around 20mpg with very very timid driving...because I have been trying to see if I can get better mileage.

The only added weight to the Trailhawk is the skid plates which do not weigh enough to affect MPG but the tiniest amount. There is a small hit to MPG because of the 4.33 gearing but again it is very little because of the 9 speed auto. Then maybe another little hit due to the different facia and lack of an airdam. None of this should put the Trailhawk at more than a couple MPG away from other trims except for the Limited on the interstate which is slightly better geared for higher speed cruising.

I think driving habits play a huge role in the MPG of any vehicle and the Compass is picky about how to get decent MPG out of it and the conditions it is driven in. Our Trailhawk was getting 22 MPH mostly on my wife's work commute which is horrible for decent MPG. Very short trip mostly 30-35 MPH windy mountain road and a steep hill that she has to go over each way. Here lately she is getting 23 MPG I don't know if that is because the Jeep is more broken in or the warmer temps maybe both.

Our last trip on the interstate yielded 26.6 MPG driving with cruise set to 75 MPH most of the trip and 65 in a few spots. This is over rolling terrain a bit of it hard rolling.

I don't know if we are lucky but I have hand checked MPG against the computer and it is within what you would expect from slightly different levels of fill.

I recommend if your not doing so already do the math and check it against the computer. At Least one member here had their computer MPG way off till they had the dash reflashed to fix dimmer issue so good idea to check it every now and then. Then put the MPG gauge in the center of the lcd and drive trying to stay in the higher MPG numbers in the green. If your still getting bad MPG ask your dealer to give your Compass a good going over. If they give you any crap about it call and complain to corporate or ask Jeepcares on this form to help.

Just to follow up with Chris. I have a Limited after a Winter where I was lucky to get 24-25MPG highway and was getting about 22mpg a tank. I am now during the spring getting 28.5-29 MPG a tank and my overall is at about 25.9 (it only updates at .2-.3 mpg increments) at 6k miles.

This is a heavy car, with a slightly under powered engine, geared for smooth steady gear changes. So bunny hopping from a light and using the gas as a pretty much on off switch is going to tank the fuel economy. Just as a demonstration, give the car about 50% gas at the light, and look at the RT Fuel Economy. Let the 4MPG sink in or the 10ish when you are accelerating quickly from 40MPH. The car will let you sip gas if you let it, but you have to let it. These over stressed 4's and turbo 4s are never going to get EPA if they are treated like one would a V6 or V8.

I just got 22.96 MPG on my latest fill-up, with mainly city driving. (I was taking it easy though, and watching the Fuel Economy to see how far I could push it in the city)

Yep winter takes a toll on MPG. My wifes drive to work has come up to 23 point something and I don't know if it will get much better as she has a steep hill she has to go over each way. Then the twisty little mountain road that has you on an off the gas a lot. Lastly there is only a small part of her drive that has a 45 MPH speed limit the rest is 30-35 where the 4wd/AWD mode stays locked in. It just adds up to getting low MPG on anything but we are liking the 22-23 over the 12-13 MPG our chevy Suburban was getting for the same drive.

I keep the MPG gauge on all the time and yes if I keep an eye on it we get pretty decent MPG. But unless we go for a trip in the flat land we will never see the EPA rating on probably anything.

Vehicles with low end torque V-6 or V-8 engines and or better gearing get closer to those EPA numbers in the mountains. But of course larger engines burn more fuel overall unless you really run the crap out of a 4 banger to make up for missing 4 cylinders. I try to take it easy on the climbs while driving locally but I watch the MPG gauge get down into the 4-6 range all the time and there is nothing one can do about it going uphill trying to stay around the speed limit. On the trip to my daughter's college it is almost all interstate and rolling terrain. About 20 or miles is hard rolling and the little Jeep spends a lot of time downshifting into the 3000 RPM range. After that the terrain gets better and it mostly stays between 2000 and 2500 RPM at 75 MPH we hit around 26 MPG. At 65MPH it is closer to 29 but people try to run you over doing 65 in a 70. lol

I did once go into manual mode at 75 on mostly level terrain and shift to 9th once for a bit the MPG gauge showed 28ish MPG I really think they should gear the US models to use 9th at around 75 then we would see better MPG all around and better acceleration.

Wolfy's post 456.2 miles on one tank proves that yes you can get and even push those EPA MPG but it will make you work for it. I doubt I'll ever see it but it is possible. LOL

Nearly pure highway driving at a hypermiling pace of 55 mph, I've managed to squeeze 34.8 mpg on winter gas. I expect I can push mine over 35 if I try again on a mild day that doesn't require me using A/C. As for my local running with traffic, I'm showing 24 on the mpg screen, and my commute is typically opposite the flow of traffic where I live. This is with mixed highway commuting alonside city stop and go. I'm happy enough. It does sound like your commute slog is eating at your figures.

I have over 26,000 on the vehicle at this time. I track all my fuel cost and mileage. With winter driving and snow tires and here we have winter blend fuel which reduces fuel mileage, my Trailhawk averaged 26.10 MPG for the year/ My lowest mileage was 18.44 mpg my best was 32.5 mpg. Most of the time I use Shell regular grade 87 octane gasoline.

I have the same mileage as you and I have some problems with the start/stop, some functions in the Uconect are not saved or working sometimes, I have a Trailhawk that was manufactured in September and matches with this bulletin, but my local dealer, has not been able to make the PCM reflash or don't know how. Were you already able to solve it?

The Trailhawk advertised curbweight is 3633, the 4x4 Latitude is 3327...300 lbs is not insignificant, but I get your point. I think it comes into play more than you might think on hills...

Ive been tracking my mpgs for the past weeks. Now im gonna take everything out of the car and do another test for a whole week. If it comes down to having too much excess weight on the car giving me low mpgs im gonna be dissapointed honestly. Hopefully it wont be much differance.
