So I have been needing a roof rack for sometime now because the noodles were not cutting it anymore...so I grabbed a welder, some steel, and a friend and got to work. I didnt want to spend an arm and a leg for cross bars so I just built my own. Started out with 2in angle iron for the brackets that mount directly into the factory location. Then bought two 1in square steel tubing. It took us two nights but only about 4 hours to complete the whole project. I will post pictures later tonight!

Here is the before solution with pool noodles....

Here is the finished product! Coated in black truck bed liner from home depot. All in all this project cost me around $84 bucks with all the materials coming from Home Depot! Thats a lot less than $150 for just one Yakima cross bar! and it fits right in the stock location! Now to move on to the roof basket!

Update! The rack is holding up amazingly! It holds much more than anything that is sold by big companies! It even fits a rhino rack roof basket! I will up load pictures later with the roof basket on! If you need a roof rack I would definitely build one rather than buy one! Save money and it is stronger!

I know this is an old thread, but how did you attach it to the side rails? It looks like maybe just a couple of nuts and bolts?

Also, did you ever try the wind deflector?
