Hey all,
I have mixed feelings about the MPG on my new TrailHawk. I educated my self about the 2.4L TigerShark engine & it’s short commings. I believe it’s basically the same engine we had in our 2011 Kia Sorento but with “direct injection. So I am comparing it to the Kia for reference.
The Kia performed well but the auto tranny seemed geared lower...so it tacked up briskly in all gears...but we still averaged 23 mpg town/30 hw. The Compass just seems quicker to upshift & the engine burden (showing with the mpg screen active) gives it terrible milage, especially accelerating from a stop with moderate throttle.
The TigerShark(correct me if i’m in error) has a throttle body and some sort of “air injection”? Well the performance seems adequate but no where near as sporty as the Kia’s respone.
Milage: breaking in the Jeep, we stayed off the highway for the most part (first 500mi) and the dang “mpg” we have configured to stay in the cluster’s upper right display, Never goes above 20mpg...somethings wrong with that computation because we just did a hw cruise & the “trip” mpg was 31mpg over 48 mi!! Yea! (I checked by math & was accurate) So I feel better about that...if only the main display would update!
A few more hundred miles & I’ll drain the oil & replace with the synthetic.

I cant get over 20 mpg either. I do mixed city/highway and the mpg sucks compared to what is to be expected. 25 mpg mixed is impossible (at least for me) and I drive light footed. BTW, make sure you are resetting your trip counter to accurately get that gas fill-up total mpg.

I've noticed the same thing! What is portrayed on the dash is not what I'm getting in real life. Maybe it takes a little for the car to "learn"? Granted I'm only at 300 miles now but it's funny I noticed the same thing.

I have 30 fuel receipts in mine. I use a spreadsheet to track MPGs and engine hours. Just filled up on the way home tonight. 6,007 miles on the clock and bought it with 14 in September. I live in EC Wisconsin. I've made two 1,000 plus mile road trips in it. Light trailer towing on two occasions.

Cost per mile $0.098
Gallons used: 236.918
Total gas: $590.84
Average MPGs: 26.608

I drive between 4 and 18 miles to work. Most of the time, it is 12 miles (middle distance building). It gets hot, but not for too long. I have yet to plug in my pan heater this year. Tonight is going to be the first night.

Best tank: 31.229 MPGs
Worst tank: 21.392 MPGs

This makes me feel better... I just got mine last week and my readout is stuck at 20 mpg as well. I'll be patient and see what happens. Thanks for starting the thread.

I had the cluster update done today and was happy that the “Avg MPG” now updates regularly! Mixed driving 24mpg...much better!

I see we have a similar climate. I used to live in MN...2x actually. I am sure many of you use this Forum on your phones...which means you do not see signature blocks (Mods...can we fix that dumb idea?). I have a New Compass 2017 Latitude 4x4 with the 6spd manual. I do not have the 6 or 9 speed auto. That may play a part.

what is a "Cluster Update" and how do you get it "done"? Thanks!
The FCA Recall “T70” updating the instrument cluster software due to the “non-dimming” issue affecting many Compasses. 20 mins at the dealer, done.

Definitely re-check the settings because there are different MPG figures (instant vs average) and if you have it setup to show an average for all-time that might report fairly low and be slow to change.

We just did a 1200 mile trip and averaged 28 MPG with the 9-speed. I was able to hold 30 MPG as long as the speed was under 70 MPH, over that dropped down to 28, threatened to go to 27 in hilly-wisconsin, but trip average was able to keep 28 just barely.

Are you guys resetting the counters when you fill up with gas? In a Honda I used to have it could be programmed to automatically reset after refilling at the gas station. These Jeeps don't have that so if you want to know whats going on from tank to tank you need to be going to the economy screen or your trips A and B and holding the "ok" button for 10 seconds to reset those. Otherwise you are just collecting hundreds or thousands of miles of gob data and since fuel economy is usually low at the onset its going to skew your info and make it slow to reflect changes.

Reading the chapter in the user manual about how the MPG and trip counters work would answer and solve a lot of your guy's confusion, I think.

^^ I'm going to try what you said about the economy screen. I havent reset that since I got the car but I have reset the trip A when I fill up.

I'm getting roughly 17-20mpg mixed. Definitely not what I expected but its been ok so far.

It is nice to be on the other side of the fence. My '15 Trailhawk 3.2L always got 17ish, plus or minus two. Over 66,000 original miles by me. Winter fuel is hurting me a bit, but I'm still 4-5 MPGs above you guys.

Side note...when it is below 40 F or colder, and you are at a stop sign / light, push your shift lever over into manual mode. Are you starting out in 2nd gear, or 1st gear?

I don't have my latest fuel records in front of me but. Here is my averages that I do have @ 15,311 miles Average fuel economy 27.27 MPG/ lowest 21.45/ Best 32.50 / 573.643 gal. $1400.81 cost/ $2.44 per gal.
Mostly state highways 55-65 mph.
Mileage has dropped 2-4 miles per gallon with the addition of snow tires, colder weather, winter fuel blend.
I don't know about other models, but my Trailhawk regardless of settings or conditions always starts off in second gear.
Guess I mentioned that before in another thread.

AFAIK its not based on temperature, when the non-trailhawk 9-speeds are in snow mode is when they set it to prefer to start in 2nd.

The definition of 2nd gear in casual conversation, as WisHawk pointed out, depends on your trim as the trailhawks always start in what is "technically" the second gear of the transmission and if you are wondering "does that mean the trailhawks will start in the transmission's 3rd gear in snow mode?" the answer is almost certainly no. That would put them pulling away from a stop at an 8:1 ratio and it is extremely unlikely the engineers would do that.

The second-gear start of a non-trailhawk 9-speed is almost 11:1, the first gear start of a trailhawk (as we said, technically 2nd gear) is 12:1
So if 11 or 12ish to one is the most desirable snow&ice starting ratio as calculated by Jeep's engineers then the trailhawk always starts in an optimal ratio for slippery conditions.

What I want to know is how firm is the rule. That is, did Jeep completely lock out use of first gear in the trailhawks unless in rock mode or can it dig down to first in a normal driving mode if at a stop and the pedal is mashed to the floor. aka, does it have a leg up on the other models from a hole-shot or is it crippled from a standing start?

Also, is first gear accessible outside of rock mode on a trailhawk when using the auto-stick feature? If anyone tests this, you will need to be careful because they might label second gear as "1st" and present it to you that way on the screen. You'd have to start from a stop on a highway and count your shifts and see if you have a 9th gear or if it only goes up to 8.

I did this a couple weeks ago. (Trailhawk) In manual mode I can start in 1st gear in any setting.
It is locked in first gear in Rock Mode.
It has never dropped into 1st gear ever in any setting. Unless I manually put it in first.
Even what you could call a drag race type start it starts out in second.
In manual mode you can definitely tell it is in first gear just by the difference in RPM. I also ran mine through all the gears in manual a couple times after the transmission was replaced. Hope that helps answer your questions.

1600 miles so far I’m averaging 19.7 mpg in my Trailhawk ... I’m not an aggressive driver and I live in a mostly flat area. On highway trips it’s getting about 24 mpg. As of now it’s getting worse mpg than my wife’s 15 Grand Cherokee ... hope it gets better!

I don't know if the US gets the diesel, but if you do - anyone experienced mileage figures yet ? We've got the 2.0 litre (you say liter !) Limited Diesel on order.

No diesel here, only the 2.4 tigershark. Would love to have the diesel.
