Hi All,
Total newbie here, and not mechanically minded so I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question.

I have a 2016 latitude 4x4, 42,000 miles on the clock. I know the vehicle has an oil change indicator built in but i'll be changing my oil every 5,000 as Ive always done on previous vehicles.

My question is, aside from a cost difference, is there any advantage over 5W20 full synthetic v synthetic blend or vice versa, which would you people suggest?

Full Synthetic is the best, hands down, bar none, scientifically proven again and again.

Blends are a rippoff, a marketing gimmick to nab people who are easily fooled and think they want to go middle-of-the-road. There are no standards for blends, they could use 99.9% regular dino oil and one drop of synthetic and label it as a blend and sell it to you. Avoid.

Conventional is still OK for older cars that were built around it, or for cheeply topping off something that leaks, or as basic fill for anything you really don't care that much about and don't plan to own for too long.

This video is one of my favorites, notice how you are better off with dirty synthetic than brand new conventional oil. That pretty much sums it up.

With fully synthetic oil and a good filter I just go by the oil change indicator, or 6 months, whichever comes first. I really don't see any advantage of earlier oil changes, it is wasteful actually. Now with conventional oil sure, do them early. Overall, synthetic is better for your motor and not really that much more expensive as you can have longer oil change intervals with no worries.

If you change your oil on schedule then either synthetic or conventional will be fine. But definitely buy a quality oil filter, because regardless of which oil you choose if the filter sucks at filtering or is poorly constructed and fails what oil is in there won’t help much.

If you’re not sure of which after market filter to go with I always tell folks just stick with a factory filter, mopar in this case.

It will be fine, but not great or as good as it could be. Since he's in San Diego it never gets cold enough to worry about the dismal performance of conventional oil on a very cold start like we have all winter here in Minnesota. Nobody here would dream of running anything other than full synthetic in the winter, especially not in newer vehicles which have tighter tolerances than ever before.

Its a completely moot point for the new Compass, there is no such thing as conventional 0W-20 oil ;-)

You mention 0W20 oil, I'm using 5W20 in my 2016. Is 0W20 the grade for the 2018 Compass?

Oil type

ALWAYS use synthetic oil! I am an ex GM mechanic (ASE Master Certified as well) and all vettes I worked on used MOBIL 1 Oil. I NEVER saw a lubrication failure on ANY vette that used synthetic ( vette owners beat their cars, Gee what a surprise). Also use the recommended weight called for. Todays engines have very close tolerances and require 0 weight oil in some cases. Using heavier weight oil destroys your gas mileage! I have seen this first hand. Martysmile:
