Hello,

My wife bought a 2018 Jeep Compass last November. The first 3 months everything was great, but in the last 4-5 month, we have noticed a high revving when taking foot off the gas to slow down or coast.

Once occasion this occurs is when accelerating up to 55-60 km/h, then take foot off the gas. We hear a loud rev almost like we have down shifted. Sometimes when looking at the RMP's you will see them jump from 2500-3200. Other times when driving through town it will just start revving high for no reason.

We have taken to dealership several times, but they say there is nothing wrong or they can't hear anything. The revving occurs several times on any given trip and seems to be getting worse.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue like this?

Maybe he means that humming sound from the RDM .

Not likely with that much RPM swing unless they are catching it right at a downshift. I have felt deceleration with the noise a few times now but has not shown on the tach.

My best guess is engine braking kicking in. I have noticed if I hold my foot lightly on the brake for a few seconds without really giving it any brake pressure it seems to want to help use the engine to scrub off speed. What is really nutty is using the cruise control up here in the mountains. It will do insane downshifts going down hill to try to keep the Jeep at the speed you set it at. I once had it darn near bounce the tach at max. Now I'm careful about it and if I see it dropping gears I add brake to kick the cruise off and slow it down. These are funky automatic transmissions!!!!

Having the same issue with my 2018 compass that I just purchased. Did you ever find a solution to the issue?

Not engine braking.
I have a manual compass and when not in gear and coasting, have hanging idle until come to a stop.
Think it's more part of pre-defined attempt at rev matching but doesn't seem very well thought out or well measured.
This is also on my brand new 2019 Compass sport with 2000 km's and notice right from the start.

Asked the dealer they have no knowledge of any rev matching, but they seem to have very little knowledge of anything I've asked them about so far .. lol

I hear something similar, I also have a 2019 Compass, 6 speed manual. When coasting to a stop sign or light and not in gear it sounds like a revving up from the rear end, but the RPM gauge does not show an increase in engine RPM. I am guessing it has something to do with the automatic 4WD. I have not tried to put it in 4WD lock and see if the sound goes away yet, basically I just ignore the sound.

That's a good point about coming from the rear it does have that sounds seeming like from the back. I do see my rps's hang though (not increase but not drop either even though in neutral). Might be transfer case related, in which case hope and pray that its normal (transfer case woes are the worst, remember from my BMW days.... yikes)...
