A black Limited with the 5-speed and a sunroof. Doesn't sound like a huge request.
It has been over six weeks since I wrote the order for my Compass and the dealer unable to give me a delivery date.
For over 30years I have only owned standard shift cars and could never imagine paying "extra" to have an auto-shifter. As well I understand in Canada the 5-speed's fuel economy makes it eligable for a sales tax credit while the auto-stick is not.
Well I test drove both the CVT, which was pleasant enough for one foot driving and the 5-speed. The 5-speed was smooth so there was no second thought. Just never imagined the 5-speed would be so illusive. I am sure I could have had an automatic by now, the dealer is sitting with over a dozen on his lot. Any that I have seen parked around the city have been autos also.
Are most people chosing the automatics?

I'm with ya. I signed my order for a Stickshift just about 5days ago. But i had a hard enough time finding a Stick for a test drive. And even the dealer had me drive a stick patriot instead.

After reading the stories on this board i am prepared for a long wait.

How long until you get your Compass? My dealership called my finally to let me know my order has finally shown up on the schedual. They expected the VIN any day and once they get that they will be able to predict delivery. I'm thinking first week June but still holding my breath.

I called the dealer today, got my VON #, and he said it was scheduled for shipment tomorrow.

I am not holding my breath though =)

i2canoe,

Did they figure out where your car is yet??

I just called the order status line and they told me i was KZM, which means the car is built and is on a train.

I don't think the 5 speed is what's holding your order up - I think it's the Sunroof. I've heard a lot of people have had long waits for Compass', Calibers and Patriots with a Sunroof. I even read a post on a Caliber forum that once they cancelled the Sunroof option the car was built and delivered in a couple of weeks.

Still waiting . . . Still hoping . . .

:x Well here I sit - still waiting! :x
Don't even wanna call the sales guy anymore. Called him last week and same old. I know when I do call him he will be so sure he will hear any day and that I will have the car in June. Can't blame him, he's just doing what sales guys do.
Meanwhile I cannot believe that in 2007 they don't have a computor able to tell them once they program in an order when they will be able to produce the car. Wow talk about C/S. How many companies out there today can take an order (forget about the dollar value) and 60days later still not be able to tell the customer when to expect the product.
Never mind that . . . where do you find a fish like me who whould wait so and not just tell them to shove it, and then what? Give in on the shift and/or sunroof and take one off the lot? dealer would love that! Or go order again from another dealer, they will tell me now to wait the 08.

A bit of luck

Thanks Z
So I called the customer service number, listened to all the instructions, punched in all the numbers until reaching a human, more questions until I give my address, sorry cannot trace Canadian orders.
I get from her the Canadian C/S number and again listen to all the instructions, punch all the numbers until I get to the human, this time, sorry, Canada C/S cannot trace production the way they can in USA. Bummer, so I go about my morning. Sez alot for computors - eh :!: :p
Now call it good luck or what but an hour later my car salesman calls me to let me know finally that my car should be arriving in two weeks. He confirmed it was the 5-speed and not the sunroof I had to wait for, they have my car on the lot with the sunroof if I would have taken the auto shift.
Finally call me :D

Awesome! that is good news indeed. I don't know about you but i have an easier time waiting for something if i know when i can expect it. Make the wait seem more bearable then, "gee, it should be here sometime.."

STILL WAITING!!!

Well - the dealer's suggestion at the end of May that my car was built and would be in-in a "couple of week" LOL, was a myth.
I called on 6/15 and was assured the car was on the rails now several days and would be in any day. . .should have arrived last week . . . so where is it? Next week it will 12 week since I ordered and was told a 4 to 6 week wait
I went by the dealer last week and they are unloading tons of Caravans - whippie!! but have yet to bring in my car. Meanwhile next week and the week after are both holiday weekends with 4day weeks, I have no Compass for this holiday weekend and if it comes in next week I bet that the dealer will be too jamming in service to ready the new car for me.
Gonna make them throw in the sport rack for the aggravation.

Guess I have read a lot of posts about people waiting for the five speed. I just have to wonder, base model Compass for base price, IS a five speed. $15,985.00 was supposed to be a stick. If they advertised it as such, (me, personally, I do more city driving, so I opted to pay the extra grand for the automatic), then why is there such a problem? It seems to me there should be more of those around, and the rest of us should be waiting for an automatic. Kinda sounds like this situation should be in reverse???

Lack of Limited Five Speeds.

A salesman at another dealership explained to me when I decided I wanted the Limited with 5speed and sunroof that would be a difficult find because the production plans were for about 1/3 production Compass Limited model, 1/3-base model Compass Sports, and 1/3-middle choice Compass North models. Then figure that they plan that people buying the base sport model would be looking for the base price - ergo - give that market lots of base (5speed) trannies. Now thinking on the same lines, marketing would figure that those looking to buy the Limited would want the fully loaded vehicle, with all the baubles, bells and whistles, including that snappy new CVII so plan accordingly, especially for all the vehicles (probably more then 75%) not produced to specific buyer order. It is always easier for dealers to move vehicles with automatics.
Meanwhile, go know, - March - the month I order my 5spd Compass Ltd - would be the same time that the Compass would be introduced in S.Africa - and only available in the 5spd-Ltd model - I am sure the fix was in for me as all possible 5spd Compass Ltds must of been put out with RH drive for S.Africa.
Such is life and so I wait.

that's interesting ... 'cause there isn't a "North" model for the US. we have the Sport and the Limited. perhaps those were the plans for Canadian deliveries?

That's it. Canada was offered three Compass packages. Still no reason for more than a 12 week wait.

Yeah, I agree there. It is easier to sell the automatics, but like my roomate for example, wouldn't drive an auto unless that was the only option. My next Jeep is going to be a Wrangler, and in that case, I want a manual myself. Course, now that I have had the Compass for a while, I can see where it would be fun to drive it as a stick. Just figured there would be more of them around, 5 spds that is.

My parent's got a manual Limited Compass 2.4l i4. I've driven it a few times, and it is not like driving my trucks... lol But it is fun to drive though... :D

I've got a '07 4.2l v6 F150 with a 5 speed manual and I've got a '00 4.7l v8 Dodge Dakota with a 5 speed as well.

I really wanted a F150 with a v8 5 speed... but no such animal... looked towards other manufacturers, nada. So it was either that F150 or a F250 with a v8 or diesel. So I took the F150 with the v6 5 speed only because I had my '99 and never had a problem with it. :D

I refuse to drive automatics... just feel unsafe.

I can't believe the decline in manual transmissions... it's sooooo sad. :(

The 5 Speed

Well I have been a Compass driver now for a full week, 600kms, and I must say that the 5-speed was worth the 3 month wait.
The car is smooth.
It pulls well in second when doing stop and go driving, Accelerates nicely on the freeway.
Upshifts and downshifts very smoothly. . . Last night I had passengers say that they didn'd realize that they were riding in a standard shift vehicle.
I don't find "blind spots" an issue as the side mirrors really give a good view but tight parallel parking takes getting used to.
