I have a 2008 Jeep Compass Limited 4WD. It came with the P215/55R18 sized tires. I'm looking to buy some winter tires (plus winter rims) and want to know if I'll be okay if I use the P215/60R17 or P215/65R17 tires that come on the Sport models?

My mechanic is recommending that I stick with the original sized tires as the On board Computer, ABS & Electronic Stability Control are calibrated for the original sized tires.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Go with the 17" or better still go with 16" rims.
Much better selection of tires at much better prices.
18" snow tires are way expensive and NOT as well suited to winter driving as the smaller rim sizes. You want the bigger rubbers in the winter. LOL

Oh-ya . . . the smaller rimmed-bigger rubber gives a much softer ride then the 18"

the computer will not be affected if you keep overall diameter the same, use this tool to calculate the best tire size based on wheel size:

http://ejelta.com/tiresize/index.html

look under 16 & 17" to find which diameter that has less difference.

So I went with the P215/65R17 on the 17" Steel Rims. No problems aside from the Tire Pressure Monitor System not working anymore, but I can live with that.

The ride is smoother now with the bigger sidewalls on the tires.
