Hi Folks. New to this group! I recently bought a 2015 Compass. I bought a backup camera with monitor.

any advice on how to tap into the backup light? I’m not sure how to run the wire from the license plate up through the hatch and down to the light. Any advice is welcome!

Sorry I didn’t see this post until now but if your camera is similar to mine, follow these instructions to avoid dealing with the backup lights, which add another painful step to the installation process.

On the long RCA cable there are 2 little red wires on the yellow plugs. On the end that goes into the stereo, attach that little red wire to the AMP turn on wire from the stereo (or another 12v switched ignition source). On the end for the camera plug, connect that little red wire to the red wire on the power adapter. Then connect the ground on the power adapter to a screw on the liftgate handle or another metal grounding point inside the lift gate. Now your camera will be powered whenever your stereo is turned on. If your stereo has an RCA input for a FRONT camera, you can use an RCA Y-adapter (splitter) and plug into both the rear cam and the front cam inputs. Then you can see your rear camera even while you’re driving.

Keep in mind this solution only works if your stereo has a CanBus system that automatically detects if you’re in reverse (and brings up the backup camera screen). If your stereo relies on the camera to sense power only during backup, you’ll need to tap into the reverse lights. Most of the Android stereos from Amazon have a CanBus box that will automatically switch when you enter reverse.

Can you provide photos of which wire goes to where? In the unit received the camera came with three parts (the black cable, the camera cable with RCA, and a smaller sable with red and black wires). The latter I gave no Idead how to approach. it seems to short to do anything with. Do I need an extension for it? I have brought the TopWeb product and I believe this is the same unit as yours.

Just follow my post about how to install the backup camera. You can click on my profile and find it in my post history, or here’s the link for the same post on the Jeep Patriot forum.

I call the three different parts of the camera system by these names:
1. The camera
2. The RCA extension
3. The power adapter

here’s a sordid-diagram I made to provide others with info about how I wire the power adapter. Read the post though, since it describes the whole process. Basically the red wire provides power to the camera itself, the black wire gets grounded.
