Resurrecting this thread. I've read 24 pages worth of posts on this but my situation is different. ESS has been eratic since I've owned this car with 44K miles, now at 83K miles. Yep I have the 4th to 5th gear whiplash shift or harsh shift but learned how to deal with it as my Jeep dealer service rep said there's no fix or s/w update. So about the ESS, had the car in a few weeks ago and they charged the batteries saying they weren't bad but low enough to set off the disabled icon on the dash. I have already replaced the aux battery, battery sensor, and have cleaned all of the cables and contacts as was shown on another post. Seems to work for a few days then light is back on. It doesn't seem like my batteries are charging enough. My dash says 14.0V-14.7V while driving, so they should be charging, however, just back from a 2000 mile trip and while 6 hrs into the trip at 75mph on Rt 70 in Ohio, the damn Auto Start/Stop disabled light came on! Why the heck would it go on 6 hrs into highway driving?!? Got home last night and disconnected the +/- cables to both batteries and checked with my multi-meter, both read 12.89V individually. I trickle charged the Aux battery last night, after a few hours it indicated it was at 80% charged or better, left it on last night and woke up to complete charge, now charging the main battery. Any idea why the batteries are not completely charging after 2000 miles of highway driving? Seems like the alternator is working but ESS keeps disabling after a week or 2 after recharge. Can it be the relay in between the batteries not functioning correctly? That's the only component I have not touched. Or is s/w screwing up the system or something else?
